The storm
On 28 July 2005, a supercell thunderstorm produced a violent tornado over southern Birmingham, England — one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded in the UK. The storm tracked northeast for twenty-three minutes through Kings Heath and Balsall Heath, reaching peak intensity with estimated winds of 157 mph across a path half a mile wide.
Over 500 buildings were damaged, including 115 businesses and several schools, at a cost of roughly £40 million — the costliest tornado in British history. Remarkably, no fatalities occurred, though thirty-nine people were injured.
