What is the closest tornado to me?
The list is sorted by distance, so the first result is the closest recorded tornado to the point you searched. Distance is measured to the nearest part of the tornado's track rather than to where it first touched down, because a tornado can pass far closer to you partway along its path than at its start.
Where does this tornado data come from?
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center severe weather database, which holds every confirmed tornado in the United States from 1950 onward with its start and end coordinates, rating, path length, width, injuries and fatalities. It is US federal government data and is in the public domain.
Why do some tornadoes show as a dot instead of a track?
Because only a touchdown point was recorded for them. Around a third of the database, almost all of it before 2000 and overwhelmingly weak tornadoes, has no end coordinate. Violent tornadoes are far better documented: all but one F5 and EF5 on record has a full track.
