The storm
On 31 July 1987, a violent F4 tornado tore through eastern Edmonton, Alberta. Fueled by a cold front colliding with warm, humid air, the storm produced a path of destruction 30.8 km long and up to 1.3 km wide. It leveled industrial buildings, tossed oil tanks in the Refinery Row area, and destroyed over 300 homes in the Evergreen mobile home park.
The tornado claimed 27 lives and injured over 300 people, making it one of the costliest disasters in Canadian history at $332 million (1987 CAD). It prompted the creation of the Emergency Public Warning System and Canada's first implementation of Doppler weather radar technology.
