The storm

The Enhanced Fujita Scale set as a mid-century field bulletin, headed READ THE DAMAGE. A barn half-unroofed by a passing tornado sits above a ruled table running from EF0 to EF5: the wind speed for each rating and the damage that earns it, from shingles and gutters lost to strong houses swept from their foundations. A note at the foot explains how Ted Fujita rated a tornado by the worst damage surveyors could find. Black ink on aged, foxed newsprint.

About the artwork: The Plains Storm Survey Board is invented, and so are its seal and form numbers. This is not the notice of any real agency. The wind ranges and damage lines follow the Enhanced Fujita Scale used in the United States since 2007. The photograph was made new for this poster and screened as a coarse halftone, and all the type is set fresh.
