The storm
On May 31, 2013, El Reno, Oklahoma, became the tragic playground of the widest tornado in documented history. While the tornado was officially ranked as an EF3 based on the damage to man-made structures, some estimations found wind speeds within the vortex exceeding 313 mph. This massive disparity between structural damage and actual wind intensity showcased a storm that possessed the raw power of an EF5, but thankfully spent much of its life over open wheat fields rather than populated urban centers.
