The storm

Andrew crossed the Bahamas as a Category 4 hurricane on 23 August 1992 before undergoing rapid intensification over the Straits of Florida. It made landfall in Miami-Dade County in the pre-dawn hours of 24 August as a compact but extraordinarily intense Category 5 system, its eyewall passing directly over Homestead and Florida City.
Wind gusts overwhelmed or destroyed every fixed anemometer in its path; peak sustained winds were reconstructed after the fact from structural damage surveys and mobile radar. Andrew crossed the Florida peninsula in roughly four hours, re-emerged over the Gulf of Mexico, and made a second landfall in Louisiana three days later.
