Dorian formed from a tropical wave on 24 August 2019 and underwent rapid intensification over the following days, reaching Category 5 status with 184 mph sustained winds before landfall on Great Abaco Island on 1 September. It then struck Grand Bahama, where it stalled nearly 24 hours, subjecting the island to catastrophic, unrelenting winds.
The storm flattened most structures in its path and left at least 70,000 people homeless across the Bahamas, the worst natural disaster in the nations recorded history. Dorian later made a final landfall in North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane before weakening. Total damage is estimated at over $5.1 billion.
