Harvey regenerated in the Bay of Campeche on 23 August 2017 and underwent rapid intensification, reaching Category 4 status with 132 mph sustained winds before making landfall near San Jose Island, Texas, on 26 August. It then stalled over the Texas coast for days as a weakening cyclone before a final landfall in Louisiana.
The system dropped unprecedented rainfall, with peak accumulations of 60.58 inches at Nederland, Texas. This catastrophic flooding inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced over 30,000 people, and caused at least 107 deaths. Tied as the costliest tropical cyclone on record, Harvey inflicted $125 billion in damage.
