Helene originated from a broad low-pressure system in the western Caribbean Sea on 22 September 2024. It underwent rapid intensification over the Loop Current, and made landfall near Perry in the Big Bend region of Florida on 27 September as a Category 4 hurricane with 138 mph winds, the strongest storm on record for that area.
The storm produced a catastrophic storm surge and record inland flooding across the Southeastern United States, ranking as the deadliest mainland U.S. hurricane since Katrina and the fifth-costliest storm in national history. It transitioned to a post-tropical cyclone over Kentucky before dissipating over Tennessee.
