Ian formed from a tropical wave in the Caribbean on 23 September 2022, intensifying into a Category 5 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico with peak sustained winds of 161 mph. It made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida, on 28 September as a Category 4 hurricane, then crossed the peninsula and made a final landfall in South Carolina two days later.
The storm caused $111.8 billion in damage, ranking as the costliest hurricane in Florida history and the third-costliest in U.S. history. A storm surge of up to 15 feet leveled thousands of structures and collapsed causeways, leaving millions without power. With 161 fatalities, Ian is the deadliest hurricane to strike Florida since 1935.
