Irma developed from a tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands on 30 August 2017, rapidly intensifying into a Category 5 hurricane with 178 mph winds and a minimum pressure of 914 mb. It held that intensity for a record 37 hours while battering the Leeward Islands, then crossed Cuba before striking the Florida Keys at Cudjoe Key on 10 September.
The storm caused catastrophic damage across the Caribbean and Florida, ranking as the sixth-costliest tropical cyclone on record and the costliest in Cuban history. At least 134 people were killed along its path, and total damages are estimated at over $77.2 billion, with millions of Floridians left without power.
