Maria formed from a tropical wave east of Barbados on 16 September 2017 and underwent explosive intensification, reaching Category 5 strength with 173 mph winds before striking Dominica on 19 September. After a brief weakening and renewed strengthening, it made landfall near Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, on 20 September as a high-end Category 4 hurricane.
The storm caused catastrophic devastation across the northeastern Caribbean, resulting in 3,059 fatalities and over $91.6 billion in damages. Puerto Rico suffered the vast majority of these losses, enduring a prolonged crisis and the worst electrical blackout in United States history before the system dissipated in the open Atlantic.
