Milton formed in the Bay of Campeche on 5 October 2024 and underwent explosive intensification over the Gulf of Mexico, reaching Category 5 status with 178 mph winds and a central pressure of 895 mb. After an eyewall replacement cycle and increasing wind shear, it made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, on 10 October as a Category 3 hurricane.
The storm produced a destructive storm surge and a deadly tornado outbreak, causing over $34.4 billion in damages across Florida. Arriving less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene, it compounded regional recovery efforts and caused 45 fatalities before transitioning into an extratropical low and dissipating near Bermuda.
