Patricia formed from a disturbance near the Gulf of Tehuantepec on 20 October 2015 and underwent explosive intensification, its winds climbing 120 mph in 24 hours to reach a record 215 mph, the strongest cyclone on record worldwide. It weakened sharply before making landfall near Cuixmala, Mexico, as a strong Category 4 hurricane.
The system dissipated within 18 hours of landfall as the rugged Sierra Madre terrain disrupted its circulation. Its rural landfall path limited direct impact, but the storm and its precursor moisture caused widespread flooding across Mexico and Central America, resulting in 13 deaths and over $483.8 million in damages.
