Wilma formed in the Caribbean on 15 October 2005 and underwent explosive intensification, reaching Category 5 status with 184 mph winds and a record-low pressure of 882 mb. After crossing the Yucatan Peninsula, the system traversed the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in southwest Florida near Cape Romano on 24 October as a Category 3 hurricane.
The storm caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean and the United States, damaging tens of thousands of homes and leaving millions without power. With at least 52 deaths reported and total damages reaching $26.5 billion, Wilma left a trail of wreckage from Mexico to Florida before becoming extratropical near Nova Scotia.
