The storm

The Tri-State tornado of March 18, 1925, the deadliest in United States history, drawn as a vintage field survey sheet. Its 219-mile path, the longest on record, runs across a topographic map of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, from touchdown near Ellington to its end just southwest of Petersburg, through Annapolis, Gorham and Murphysboro. No damage survey exists from 1925, so the path is drawn at its reported width in the colour of its F5 rating. Touchdown and lift are marked with their times, the towns it passed through are named, and state lines are marked where the map crosses them. Below the map sit a short written account of the day and the figures: path length, maximum width, rating, time of touchdown, deaths and injuries. Aged paper with ink bleed, foxing and fold lines.

About the artwork: The Plains Storm Survey Board is invented, and so are its seal and form numbers. This is not the work of any real agency. Damage paths are from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, the NCEI Storm Events Database and the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit where a survey exists. Contours from Mapzen Terrain Tiles (USGS 3DEP elevation). Roads, water and place names © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), via OpenMapTiles.
